Response to Title IX Investigation
December 22, 2015
Dear Colleagues and Friends,
I have been honored to work as a professor at UC Berkeley for the past 16 years. I have been especially privileged to teach, conduct research, and mentor remarkable students, who have inspired me in return.
Over the past three months, I have learned with great sadness about the impact my actions had on students, colleagues, family, and the extended academic and scientific communities. I never intended to cause distress and I apologize deeply for having done so. I take full responsibility and hold myself accountable for the harm done.
With the help and counsel of others, and unwavering support from my wife Susan, I am reflecting, listening, and learning. Going forward, I will continue the personal work I need to do as my highest priority and will maintain the vigilance I have incorporated into my interpersonal interactions.
Last week, UC Berkeley publicly released the documents regarding the Title IX investigation of my case. Susan and I are pleased with this release because, for the first time, it provides interested parties with direct information about the allegations and UC Berkeley’s formal response. A summary of the allegations and the facts can be found here.
I have been heartened by the advice and support from so many, and I ask for your understanding as I attempt to move forward. I hope this difficult passage will provide some healing for all of us, and perhaps even lead to a greater good.
With great respect,
